Cobalt is a grey, hard, lustrous metal, which was first discovered in 1739 and has a world production of 54,000 tonnes (2007). It is commonly a by-product of nickel and is mainly sourced in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cobalt has many applications such as the production of catalysts, batteries, chemicals, alloys and dyes.
