From 1 January 2001, the Exchange's structure became that of a limited company, The London Metal Exchange Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of LME Holdings Ltd. This holdings company is a private company whose shareholders are the broker members of the Exchange, trade clearing members and those trade members who chose to take up shares.

This holding company structure is designed to enable the existing regulated business to continue to be conducted in The London Metal Exchange Limited, but with the opportunity to develop non-regulated businesses and products in LME Holdings.
